Benefits of Diesel Engine
You may have noticed that the price of diesel fuel is higher than gasoline. Initially this might seem like a disadvantage, but because diesel engines are more fuel efficient, you’ll make less trips to fill your tank. The greater fuel efficiency of diesel comes from its higher density, producing more energy with less fuel. Diesel also has a higher compression ratio, resulting in more effective combustion within the engine.
Piggybacking on better fuel efficiency, diesel engines are ideally suited for machines like tractors that operate at lower speeds. They can generate the same amount of power as gas engines at lower revolutions per minute (RPM), allowing for slower fuel consumption. Additionally, this lets you operate a wide range of power takeoff (PTO) tractor attachments like tillers or box blades that require high power delivered at a consistent speed.
Diesel engines are widely considered more durable than their gas-powered counterparts. One of the biggest reasons is that diesel engines are water cooled. Paired with consistent operating speeds, this puts less wear and tear on the engine, providing a longer lifespan. Diesel fuel is also less acidic, causing less corrosion within the engine. With proper care, a diesel tractor can be passed down through generations with no drop-off in performance.
Despite their power, diesel engines are fairly simple from a mechanical standpoint. They’re built from heavy-duty materials meant to work hard, and don’t have many of the parts such as spark plugs or distributor caps that can go bad and need replacement. To make your life even easier, Yanmar offers maintenance kits with 100% genuine parts such as fuel separators and air filters.
Types of Diesel Engine
Small Diesel Engines
Most diesel engines are small, which means they have power-output values of less than 188 kilowatts, or 252 horsepower. They are commonly found in trucks, automobiles, agricultural equipment, and some generators. They are typically direct-injection, in-line, and have four- or six-cylinders. Many are also turbocharged and come with exhaust aftercoolers.
Medium Diesel Engines
Medium-sized engines have power-output values of 188 to 750 kilowatts, or 252 to 1,006 horsepower. They are most often found in heavy-duty industrial trucks. They are usually direct-injection, in-line, and have six cylinders. They are also turbocharged and aftercooled. Some V-8 and V-12 engines also belong to this size group.
Large Diesel Engines
Large engines come with power-output values of more than 750 kilowatts. They are often found in large industrial vehicles, including locomotives and marine vehicles, as well as large-scale generators. They also tend to be direct injection, turbocharged, and have aftercooled systems.
Two-Stoke Diesel Engines
Two-stroke engines have a simpler design than four-stroke engines. They often eliminate the need for one or two valves. Intake air and the exhaust can pass through ports in the cylinder liner, which reduces the need for more valves. Two-stroke engines weigh less than four-stroke engines. They also tend to be cheaper and easier to maintain with fewer diesel parts.
Four-StrokeDiesel Engines
With four-stroke engines, the intake and exhaust valves and the fuel-injection nozzle are located in the cylinder head. These often use dual valve arrangements, including two intake valves and two exhaust valves. They tend to be heavier and more costly to maintain than two-stroke engines.
Application of Diesel Engine

Transportation: Due to their effectiveness in moving huge loads, diesel engines are frequently employed in trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles. They are also used in long-distance transportation ships and railways.
Automobiles: Some passenger cars are powered by diesel engines, especially in areas where diesel fuel is more affordable or favoured due to its higher energy density.
Industrial Machinery: Due to their tremendous torque, diesel engines are frequently employed in heavy-duty construction machinery including bulldozers, loaders, and excavators.
Agriculture: Diesel engines are used to power tractors, combines, and other agricultural equipment because they offer the strength and dependability required for farming applications.
Power generation: In hospitals, data centres, and other crucial institutions, diesel generators are frequently employed as backup power sources. In locations with limited access to the electrical grid, they can also act as the main source of electricity.
Marine: In recognition of their dependability and fuel efficiency, diesel engines are widely employed in a variety of marine vessels, including commercial ships, fishing boats, and yachts.
Mining: Diesel engines are used in haul trucks and drilling rigs in the mining industry because of their durability and high torque in harsh situations.
Military Use: Due to their suitability for heavy-duty operations and higher fuel efficiency compared to gasoline engines, diesel engines are used to power military vehicles, tanks, and other equipment.
Stationary Engines: Diesel engines are occasionally utilised in stationary applications including industrial power plants, irrigation systems, and pumping stations.
